The vengeful catharsis of this scene portends the same tone for the book, but Newitz takes another path. Rather than revelling in a takedown of corporate evil and the social/environmental toxicity it embodies, the author opts for an exploration—via a seemingly endless cast of exemplary good-guy characters—of how one should react to such antagonists. What results is a list of alternative solutions to the bad deeds of the profit-centric Verdance (and its villainous successor, another megacorp). For instance: instead of a rail network, why not build a flying, living, self-governing train named Scrubjay?
